According to Tony Pauline of ProFootballNetwork, the New England Patriots are one of the teams interested in pursuing Marcus Mariota.
It’s no surprise that the Patriots would be looking for a quarterback “just in case” Tom Brady decides to play somewhere other than New England next season. But they are reportedly interested in signing the former Tennessee Titans quarterback, presumably whether they re-sign Brady or not.
If they do re-sign the six-time Super Bowl champion, Mariota could develop in the Patriots system, while backing up Brady and be molded to become his eventual replacement. If they don’t re-sign Brady, Mariota could be a low risk/high reward option for Bill Belichick and co.
If Brady ends up elsewhere, in all likelihood, the Patriots will enter an unofficial “rebuild”. If Mariota plays like he did in his first couple of seasons in the league, under Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels’ tutoring, and behind a line that would give him time in the pocket, he could be quite successful.
The Colts, Chargers, and Bears are also expected to be among the team’s interested in the former Heisman Trophy winner. But none of those options are as enticing than the Patriots.
