New England Patriots Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano is stepping down before his stint has officially begun.
Reports in February linked Schiano to the Patriots after Brian Flores left his post as defensive play caller to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Schiano was never officially announced as the Patriots defensive coordinator, but a statement released earlier today confirms the hiring, and now resignation, of the former Ohio State Defensive Coordinator.
Schiano said in a statement released by the team.
“I have informed Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick that I am stepping down from my position at the Patriots. This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family. I don’t want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities.”
Bill Belichick also released a statement saying “I respect coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his contributions to our staff and team. He is a friend who we support completely.”
This is another hole for the Patriots that needs to be filled before the draft begins next month.
