Report: Padres Close to Acquiring Max Scherzer In Blockbuster

The Washington Nationals have one trade piece that has probably generated the most interest of anyone on the MLB trade market. That player is Max Scherzer. He has been scouted by many teams over his last couple of starts including today. Against the Phillies in game one of their doubleheader, Scherzer spun six innings of three-hit and one-run ball while striking out five. With that game, his record now stands at 8-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 111 innings with 147 strikeouts and a 0.89 WHIP. One can understand why the 37-year-old All-Star is the most sought-after on the market.

His market appears to have generated a deal in the form of the San Diego Padres. Just as the clock hit 23 hours left until the buzzers ring, the Padres and Nationals were reportedly closing in on a deal for the three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first with the news.

This makes the Padres rotation one of the scariest in baseball with Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, Ryan Weathers, Yu Darvish, Chris Paddack, and Dinelson Lamet on his way back from injury. Adding Scherzer to this mix certainly puts lots of pressure on the Dodgers and Giants who both have great rotations in their own right. The Padres know that they have the farm for a move like this and didn’t like the prospect of facing Scherzer in the playoffs.

The return is unknown at the moment but is likely to be fairly large.
