Report: Mariners And Astros Make a Swap

Mariners And Astros Make a Swap

While the reporters were observing pregame warmups, there was an odd sight in Seattle prior to the game between the Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners. Astros’ infielder Abraham Toro was having a catch in a Mariners uniform with Mariners catcher Luis Torrens. That prompted the reporters to start digging.

Jerry Dipoto has fooled reporters once again. He sent over a couple of bullpen arms to the other dugout in exchange for an infielder and reliever.

The players involved are Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero from the Mariners to the Astros, and Toro and Joe Smith to the Mariners from Houston. All the pitchers are right-handed and Toro is a switch-hitting corner infielder who was a fifth-round pick in 2016 and debuted in summer 2019.

This trade comes as a surprise of sorts as the Mariners have been playing impressively well and sit just one game out of the Wild Card. The Mariners players also certainly didn’t agree with Dipoto’s decision.

Graveman, 30, has pitched 33 innings, striking out 34, with a 0.81 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, and 10 saves. He is on a very team-friendly contract which is appealing to the Astros.

Montero, 30, was acquired by the Mariners before this season from the Rangers and started the season as their closer. He faltered and was eventually designated for assignment last week. He has a 7.27 ERA through 43.1 innings with 37 strikeouts and 15 walks. He also saved seven games.

Smith, 37, has pitched in 27 games for Houston this year. Over those games, he’s compiled 21.2 innings, 17 strikeouts, four walks, and a 7.48 ERA. Toro, 26, has hit .211/.287/.385 with a .672 OPS while manning first and third for Houston. He also had six homers and 20 RBI’s.

Dipoto said that this is the first of many moves for the Mariners. Stay tuned.
