Report: Diamondbacks Trade Andrew Chafin to Cubs

According to Jon Heyman of ESPN, the Chicago Cubs have acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks are sending some cash considerations along with Chafin to the Cubs so that Chicago will only have to pay him the minimum salary for the rest of the 2020 season.

The Diamondbacks have been extremely active at the deadline so far, sending Starling Marte to the Miami Marlins, Robbie Ray to the Toronto Blue Jays, and now Andrew Chafin to Chicago.

For the Cubs, this deal comes with a struggling bullpen that has plagued the team’s success all season. Chafin will now slot in alongside fellow lefty Kyle Ryan in the Chicago bullpen.

Chafin is 30 years old and coming off of two consistent seasons of relief work for Arizona. Although he has struggled this year, posting an 8.10 ERA in 11 appearances, the matchup advantages Chafin can provide Chicago will only help David Ross manage in the later innings.

Arizona felt comfortable dealing Chafin after receiving Caleb Smith in return for Starling Marte. The 28-year-old lefty will now take Chafin’s spot in the Diamondbacks’ bullpen, allowing Arizona to save some money in the process.

There have been rumors of Red Sox lefty Josh Osich going to the Cubs, but it appears they landed on Andrew Chafin for the time being.

With the back-end of the bullpen struggling mightily this season, Cubs fans should be thrilled to see a consistent left-handed arm on his way to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
