Report: Buccaneers Release Vernon Hargreaves III

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived veteran cornerback selection Vernon Hargreaves III on Tuesday.

The former first-round selection from the 2016 NFL Draft was benched this past Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals for what head coach Bruce Arians described as a “lack of hustle.”

The team picked up Hargreaves’ fifth-year option this past offseason hoping defensive coordinator Todd Bowles’ man coverage-heavy system would be a better fit for the former Florida Gator.

The move will result in $4,511,076  in dead-cap for the 2019 season but will not carry into future years as the fifth-year was only guaranteed for injury.

As Hargreaves has not yet accrued four years of experience in the NFL he will be subject to the waiver wire before becoming an outright unrestricted free agent.

The move leaves Tampa Bay with five cornerbacks on the active roster in Ryan Smith, Sean Murphy-Bunting, Carlton Davis, and Jamel Dean. The latter four of which were drafted in the past two years.

The Buccaneers have yet to announce a corresponding addition to the 53-man roster.
