Boston Bruins star rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy will miss at least two weeks due to an irregular heartbeat.

The 2016 first round selection made a solid debut during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs and has enjoyed a fantastic rookie year.

The 20 year old is +20 on the ice thanks to stellar defensive play and has been able to help out the offense with 25 points as well. He also leads the team with an average time on ice per game of twenty two minutes and forty nine seconds.

Team internist released a statement on the injury saying that it’s not life threatening and he could be back within the month.

Charlie McAvoy underwent a successful procedure today at the Massachusetts General Hospital to treat an abnormal heart rhythm.

Following the Bruins game on November 26, 2017, Charlie told team physicians that he experienced heart palpitations during the game. Subsequently he underwent an evaluation, which diagnosed him with a supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). The type of SVT Charlie has is not considered to be dangerous to his health but can recur at any time and causes significant symptoms.

After consultation with team physicians, as well as experts in this type of heart condition, Charlie decided to have the condition treated with a procedure called an ablation. The decision to have the procedure done at this time is due to a high probability of recurrence. During the period from the initial occurrence ?through Saturday’s game, Charlie was cleared to play by the medical team and was monitored closely.

He will be monitored overnight at Mass General and the expected recovery period is two weeks.

It seemed as though head coach Bruce Cassidy was going to have one too many defenseman on his hand, but McAvoy’s absence will solve this issue.

Kevan Miller, who has recently been battling the flu, will likely claim McAvoy’s roster spot.

Adam McQuaid will presumably continue to be the Bruin’s sixth defenseman until McAvoy’s health allows him to return to the ice.

The rookie’s absence will deal a big blow to the Bruins upstart blue line that ranks behind only the LA Kings.

Boston is riding a three game winning streak, allowing only four goals in that span, but they will have to continue their hot streak without arguably their best defensive player.
