According to the Detroit Free Press, the Big 10, one of five “Power 5” conferences in college football, announced the cancellation of their season.

The presidents of the teams in the Big 10 voted 12-2 on the cancellation of their season. It is unclear whether or not the schools will resume play at a later date, such as the spring, or if they will not play again until at least the 2021 academic year.

The Big 10 has long been considered a marquee conference in college football. They had six teams in the 2020 Top 25 coaches poll. Ohio State, a Big 10 school, was ranked No. 2 behind Clemson. Due to the cancellation, neither them nor star quarterback Justin Fields, a projected top-five NFL Draft pick, will play.

It is currently unclear whether the Big 10 will be the only Power 5 conference to cancel, or if others will follow suit.
