Remembering The Career Of Italian Legend Paolo Rossi

Remembering the career of Italian Legend Paolo Rossi

The world is shocked to learn of the passing of Italian Soccer legend Paolo Rossi. Rossi has passed away at the age of 64. The cause of death is apparently due to an unknown illness. Rossi’s death comes exactly two weeks after the shocking passing of Argentine Soccer legend Diego Maradona.

The former Italian striker played for the likes of Juventus and AC Milan, winning the Champions League in 1985. In 1982, he played a huge role in helping Italy win the World Cup with Rossi also winning the tournament’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards respectively. In addition, he would be the first player to win all three awards at the same time. Furthermore, he would win the Ballon d’Or that year, as well.

Prior to the 1982 World Cup, Rossi was allegedly part of a betting scandal in 1980 resulting in a three-year ban for Rossi. The ban would soon be reduced to two years. He would miss the 1980 Euro tournament.

During the 1982 World Cup, he would score a hat-trick in Italy’s infamous 3-2 win against Brazil in the quarterfinals. He would add two more goals in the semifinals against Poland before adding one more in the final against West Germany. Italy would soundly defeat West Germany 3-1 to win its first title since 1938. His six goals made him the tournament’s top scorer.

His remarkable year in 1982 was truly his moment of redemption. Although he’s always maintained his innocence from the betting scandal, he was able to redeem himself career-wise and personally. He would retire in 1987.
