Red Sox Pick up New Hitting Coaches

The latest coaching acquisitions for the Boston Red Sox were named on Saturday. The two positions filled today include the hitting coach, and hitting coach assistant jobs.

This is coming off of a dreadful year at the plate for the Red Sox. The team-wide batting average, home run total, OBP, and OPS all saw major drops from last season.

Tim Hyers was announced as the hitting coach for the 2018 campaign, along with his new assistant Andy Barkett.

Hyers, for the last two years, has been serving as the assistant hitting coach for the National League pennant-winning Los Angeles Dodgers. Exclusively in 2017, the 46 year-old also worked as the hitting director in the team’s minor league system. From ‘09-’15, he worked in the Sox organization as an area scout in Georgia, and as a minor league hitting instructor.

Unlike his new peer, Barkett has not worked for a Major League Baseball club since his brief playing days back in 2001 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since 2007, he has been working coaching and managing jobs for the Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins, and the Pirates. His nine year, professional managerial record is 610-569 (.517).

As of now, the only positions left that need filling are the pitching coach jobs.
