Red Sox Expected to Reveal New Uniforms in Near Future

Mostly untouched throughout their long history, the Red Sox are expected to have some uniform changes in the near future.

Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy said that changes to the Boston Red Sox uniform are very likely in the near future. Kennedy added that the changes will “likely be geared to get us to a uniform that is geared towards high performance.”

Nike Plan

With Nike now the uniform provider (previously Majestic) for the entire MLB, new technology can be implemented to increase performance and comfort. The NFL and NBA have already made the switch to Nike in the past that has allowed for more performance increasing material and a more reluctant switch in style.

“The [players], if you talk to them, will say the uniform doesn’t fit,” said executive vice president Troup Parkinson.

The changes will be very subtle, and will “preserve our traditional look while modernizing a bit,” added Parkinson.

As for the overall look, Boston won’t be hesitant to tweak some styles.

“We will always be respectful of our incredible traditional look and feel, but we are always open to new and different concepts as time goes by,” said Kennedy.

Red Sox management is “heavily involved” in the uniform decisions.

The Red Sox feature a four-uniform rotation in their current lineup with one cap and two pairs of pants. At home, Boston wears the white on white and red on white with the arched “Red Sox” across the front. On the road, the Sox wear gray on gray and navy on gray with “Boston” across the front.

The four-uniform rotation hasn’t been changed since 2013. The club also features an old-school style throwback with “Boston” across the front once a year on Patriots Day.

Potential Changes

While simple, the Red Sox have one of the best uniform combinations in baseball. Something to look forward to is the “hanging sox” secondary logo on a cap, something the club featured in the early 2010s. From 2008 to 2013, the club changed the red “Boston” across the chest to the old-school navy but then reverted back to the red script in 2014. It is unclear as to if the Red Sox will switch the script color again. Red caps are something Boston featured in the 1970s and are still fan favorites today.

The infamous Boston ‘B’ on the caps likely won’t change, but the Red Sox’ primary ‘hanging sox’ logo may. Primary logos, adding alternate jerseys, changing up batting practice looks, and sticking with batting helmets with a shiny finish rather than a matte one while possibly adding a raised decal are all possible changes, according to The Athletic‘s Chad Jennings.

Changes likely won’t be dramatic. Instead, they will be minor but noticeable and will pay homage to the traditional look while adapting to some modern styles.

With times changing in the city of Boston, the Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins have recently switched up their classic looks. Now, it’s the Red Sox’ turn. Changes to the Red Sox uniform do not have a timetable but will come at some point in the near future.
