Red Sox Demote Ryan Brasier, Call Up Top Pitching Prospect

The Red Sox optioned Ryan Brasier to Triple-A Pawtucket Tuesday afternoon and recalled Darwinzon Hernandez to take his place.

Brasier’s demotion is the latest in a series of moves to improve an underachieving team. On Monday, the Red Sox designated Eduardo Nunez for assignment likely ending his tenure in Boston. Like Nunez, Brasier was a key member of the championship team last year.

After a breakout campaign last season, many expected Brazier to be a key part of the bullpen. So far, however, he has an ERA of 4.24 in 40 innings of work. Over the last weeks, he has allowed runs in four of his last seven outings including four last night. After allowing only two home runs last year, Brasier has already allowed seven this season.

For the Red Sox, the roster is far from set as Nathan Eovaldi is expected to assume closer duties when he returns later this month. He has been out since late April and should provide a boost to the bullpen. Even with his return only a few weeks away, Dombrowski is showing that he will not wait around.

Although Hernandez has struggled with his control, he can provide help in the bullpen. He has already made two appearances in the majors this season including one start. In 5 1/3 innings of work, he walked six batters but also struck out eleven. He can also fill in as a spot starter if needed.

With the trade deadline drawing closer, the Red Sox will continue to be busy. Brasier was a key piece in 2018, but he has struggled with control so far this year. The Red Sox are hoping he can regain his form in the minors, while Hernandez gets his chance.
