The Boston Red Sox struck a trade with the Miami Marlins for relief pitcher Austin Brice. In return, they sent minor league shortstop Angeudis Santos to the Marlins. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated utility infielder Marco Hernandez for assignment.
Brice officially made history as the first Hong Kong-born player when he made his Major League debut with the Marlins on Aug. 12, 2016, against the Chicago White Sox. While he isn’t of heritage, Brice moved around a lot due to his father’s international business affairs.
The Marlins selected Brice in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Instead of going to Appalachian State (where Brice committed to play college baseball), Brice decided to sign with the Marlins. He eventually made his Major League debut in 2016, when he pitched in 15 games and had a 7.07 ERA.
In 36 appearances in 2019, he posted a 1-0 record with a 3.43 ERA along with 46 strikeouts in 44.2 innings pitched. He was one of the few bright spots in the Marlins’ bullpen last year. Red Sox fans are hopeful he can make a similar impact on their 2020 roster.
