Providence Bruins Announce the Hiring of Three New Coaches

The Providence Bruins announced Monday they have filled three coaching vacancies.

Prospects are always key to the future of any NHL franchise. The development of Boston’s future is now in new hands.

Jay Leach hired as head coach

The Boston Bruins promoted Kevin Dean to an assistant coaching position in early June, thus leaving their Providence counterpart without a head coach.

The Providence Bruins decided to fill their head coaching vacancy with someone who already had ties to the franchise. Jay Leach served as an assistant coach for the 2016-2017 Providence Bruins, helping guide the team to the Calder Cup Semifinals.

Leach spent a season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before joining the Bruins.

He also had a brief coaching stint in Germany where he guided the Adler Mannheim to a championship.

Leach used to be a pro hockey player before becoming a coach. Ironically, his NHL career included a three-year stint with the Boston Bruins.

Spencer Carberry hired as assistant coach

Spencer Carberry is new to the Providence Bruins. He spent last season as the head coach of the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL.

Before that, he spent six seasons in the ECHL with the Carolina Stingrays.

This will be his first appearance in the AHL.

Mike Dunham hired as goalie development coach

Mike Dunham has been coaching with the New York Islanders for nine years.

He will not be a typical goaltending coach, but rather a development specialist.

The Bruins have several intriguing goaltender prospects, headlined by James Corcoran, so Dunham may play a big role in getting them ready for potential NHL debut.
