Premier League Extends Suspension

The Premier League announced on Thursday that they would extend the suspension of the current season until April 30. Initially, the suspension was set to last only until April 3.

This is the latest development in an ever-changing world as everyone deals with the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Executives from all 20 of the top-flight clubs met with league officials to discuss how the league would move forward.

A decision was made to complete the 2019-20 campaign before starting a new season. Some officials are hopeful that play can resume in May even if that means playing games with no fans in attendance.

The commitment to finish the current season is in large part due to the implications of not having a league winner, relegation and promotion of clubs, next season’s European competitions, and the FA Cup competition.

In order to ensure the season is completed before a new season begins, league officials agreed to waive the law mandating all competitions end before June 1.

During the suspension, some clubs have continued with training sessions, but that is now being halted until April 3 at the earliest.

The entire European soccer world has been impacted as most leagues in Europe have suspended play. UEFA also announced that Euro 2020 will be postponed to 2021.
