Phillies Now Have No Excuse to Let J.T. Realmuto Go Elsewhere

Phillies have no excuse to let JT Realmuto elsewhere

The New York Mets have signed their catcher in James McCann, and the Philadelphia Phillies remain as the only perfect fit for J.T. Realmuto. Now, there are no excuses for the front office to miss out on the best catcher in baseball.

Dave Dombrowski took over as the Phillies’ first-ever President of Baseball Operations on Friday afternoon. He has a reputation for spending his boss’ money to bring in top players to win the World Series. The only difference this offseason is that player is already in town in J.T. Realmuto.

The Mets were expected to be the favorite to sign the two-time All-Star catcher, as Steve Cohen had $14 billion and was willing to spend it to make his childhood team into a winner again. They decided to go with the cheaper option in McCann at $40 million over four years. The only other team that was the fit for Realmuto was the Phillies.

Staying in Philly?

Philadelphia currently doesn’t have a catcher other than backup, Andrew Knapp, while Bryce Harper has been the voice of the fanbase over the past year to re-sign Realmuto to be their catcher for years to come. Now, Dombrowski and owner John Middleton have zero excuses to do just that because their biggest competitor for his services is off the board and their second choice at catcher is also off the board.

The Toronto Blue Jays might be kicking the tires on signing Realmuto, but he has made it clear he wants to stay in Philadelphia and be in the same lineup as Harper, Alec Bohm, and Rhys Hoskins.

It seems like it’s the Phillies bidding against themselves for Realmuto’s services now that McCann is behind the plate for the Mets. Middleton and Dombrowski better bring back Realmuto, or else the fans will be in an uproar.
