Padres Acquire Taylor Williams From Mariners

Buzzer beaters are normally reserved for basketball, but A.J. Preller pulled one off before the MLB trade deadline today at 4:00 p.m E.T.

The San Diego Padres made a last-second deal with the Seattle Mariners for right-handed pitcher Taylor Williams. In return, the Padres are sending the Mariners a PTBNL.

Williams has thrown 13.2 innings in 14 games, posting a 5.93 ERA. His FIP is 3.50, which indicates his ERA may be inflated by poor defense behind him.

The Padres’ bullpen has a 5.20 ERA, which ranks 22nd in MLB. They also acquired relievers Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla on Sunday night in a seven-player deal with the Mariners and Trevor Rosenthal on Saturday from the Royals.

San Diego made a total of six trades prior to the deadline. In addition to the Williams trade and the two listed above, they acquired Mitch Moreland on Sunday morning, Jason Castro on Sunday afternoon, and Mike Clevinger this morning.

San Diego is 21-15 and tied for the second-best record in the NL with the Chicago Cubs.
