The San Diego Padres acquired Mitch Moreland, 34, in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for prospects Jeisson Rosario and Hudson Potts.

This trade will provide an upgrade at the DH position for San Diego, a team that is second-best in runs scored and home runs this season. Moreland is slashing .328/.430/.746 with a 203 wRC+ in 22 games with the Red Sox. He also has eight home runs and 21 RBI. He’s second in baseball behind only the Nationals’ Juan Soto in OPS with a mark of 1.177

This is the second trade before the deadline for San Diego, who is in second place in the NL West with a 20-15 record. They acquired reliever Trevor Rosenthal from the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

The Red Sox are receiving two prospects who ranked in the top 20 of the Padres loaded farm system. Potts, 21, was drafted in 2016 as a third baseman and was ranked No. 16 in the Padres system. At Double-A Amarillo in 2019, he hit .227 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI.

Rosario, 20, was ranked as the 19th prospect in San Diego. The center fielder played at Single-A Lake Elsinore in 2019, hitting .242 with three home runs.
