Oakland Raiders Sign Nevin Lawson

The Oakland Raiders have signed cornerback Nevin Lawson to a one-year deal worth just over $3 million, per Michael Gehlken of Las Vegas Review-Journal Dianna Russini of ESPN. Lawson was recently cut by the Detriot Lions in an effort to create cap space.

Lawson was a fourth-round draft pick by the Lions in the 2014 draft. He spent five years in Detroit starting in 54 games and totaling 194 tackles, 25 tackles, 25 passes defended, one sack, and a forced fumble.

Last season the five-foot-nine cornerback started 14 games, making 54 tackles while defending five passes.

Lawson will add some much-needed depth to the Raiders’ secondary. After Gareon Conley and Daryl Worley, the Raiders don’t have much to offer at the cornerback position. Although Lawson has 25 total passes defended in his career, he does not have an interception in his five-year career.

The former Lions cornerback is a consistent player, but he needs to work on his ball skills and keep his hands off the receivers in coverage. If Lawson can get better at those things, he can be a nice addition to the Raiders secondary.
