Welcome back to Ice Picks. Saturday we took a bite of some humble pie as we missed on both of our selections to even out our season record to 2-2. Expect some ebbs and flows throughout the year. A good goal is to try to hit on 55-60 percent of selections. Just as important is to try to stay as even-keeled as possible. With a good mindset in tack let’s tackle some Ice Picks for Tuesday’s eight-game slate.

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers -155
The Devils have started the season off surprisingly on a good note. They carry a 1-0-1 record after giving the highly skilled Boston Bruins all they could handle in two tight games. Let’s not get it twisted, Jersey is a very young team that is very lucky to be without a loss to date. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood has been lights out stopping 62 of 65 shots and is the primary reason for the solid start. Three key contributors continue to miss time in Nico Hischier, Sami Vatanen, and Jesper Bratt. Even if one or more of these important pieces get the nod to play the Rangers should be the heavy favorite.

Despite the even record of two wins apiece between these two dating back to 2019-2020, the home team has fared incredibly well. They have dominated winning 14 of 19 contests. Plenty of rest and home-cooking for the Rangers after playing a great complete game against fellow rival New York Islanders last time out has me convinced that the blue-shirts will bring their “A” game against a much inferior opponent here. My play is to take the money line at -155 but the -1.5 +155 puck line should also be considered.
Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers -145
Expect a whole different game in the second of a back-to-back between these two. The Sabres completely trounced Philly 6-1 just last night. Nothing less than the very best out of the Flyers will be on full display here tonight. Look for the Flyers to exploit Buffalo’s weak defensive group and barely average goaltending (whoever they decide to start). Keep an eye on Kevin Hayes and Nolan Patrick.
They will be leaned on more because of the absence of number one center Sean Couturier (rib injury). Philadelphia is 13-3 at home in the last 16 tilts against Buffalo. After last night’s loss, they hold a 2-1 edge in wins dating back to last year. A good tight-checking performance here from the East division favorites is highly likely. Be sure to include the Flyers to win on the money line when making your selections tonight.
