NHL Ice Picks

Welcome back to Ice Picks, and thank you to those following along as we try to breakdown these NHL cards. Thursday we split our picks as the Devils, thanks to a 47 save performance by Mackenzie Blackwood, edged out the Rangers. Things were evened out with another supreme goaltending performance as Brian Elliot and the Flyers blanked the Sabres 3-0. Tonight we are going slightly conservative again as we back some favorites. Let’s hop right in pick some winners, time for Ice Picks.

*Season record : 3-3

Winnipeg Jets -135 at Ottawa Senators

To date, the Senators have shown us that they are more than capable to hang with some pretty solid clubs. However, perhaps some inexperience down the stretch and the inability to hold a lead will be a concern. The Sens blew a 3-1 lead and ended coming up short in the first of three versus the Jets Tuesday night. The Senators are scoring at a good rate at 3.33 goals per game but, just like many predicted, are struggling to keep them out at the same 3.33 average. Between these two, the over has hit in five of the last six. Winnipeg is now 4-1 in their last five visits to the nation’s capital.

We have to give the edge here to the Jets. The difference is the experience they have in playing for head coach Paul Maurice. Ottawa conversely is a rebuilding team trying to find its way. They are a fun team that will run and gun with their many talented young prospects but will ultimately end up on the losing side more times than not. With backup goaltender Laurent Brossoit having started Tuesday’s clash, Maurice is likely to turn to number one Connor Hellebuyck. This makes me like Winnipeg even more.

Tampa Bay Lightning -175 at Columbus Blue Jackets

Tampa finally returns to the ice after not having played since last Friday. They were scheduled to play their last two games against the Dallas Stars. Those games were postponed due to an outbreak of the coronavirus within the Stars organization. The Bolts looked great in their sweep of the Chicago Blackhawks. They will have their hands full here against a team with much higher aspirations.
The Jackets are off to a bit of a slow start having secured just a single win in four games. They just split a back-to-back with the surprisingly pesky Detroit Red Wings. They will need to work on limiting offensive chances from the opposition. They are giving up more shot attempts than they would like in the early going. All toll they are -11 CORSI for/against.
The all-time head-to-head regular season play heavily favors the Bolts. They have won 21 of the 32 contests to date. Let’s not forget though, Columbus had a clean sweep of Tampa back in the 2019 Playoffs. More recently, including the 3-1 2020 Playoff series win, Tampa Bay is 5-1 in the last six versus the Jackets. If you’re playing the totals a look to the under 5.5 is in play. Columbus is struggling, averaging just two goals per game so far in the early going. The under has hit in 12 of the last 16 games between these two in Columbus.
Until the Blue Jackets figure out their goal-scoring woes it’s difficult to back them. Tampa is well-rested and appears to have not missed a beat as defending Cup champs. Steven Stamkos is playing well and will be looked upon to partially fill what they are missing with Nikita Kucherov out. Take the Lightning in a close hard fought one in this rivalry matchup.

Do We Really Need All-Star Games Anymore?

It is safe to say last weekend’s event re-ignited the long-running criticisms of the NBA All-Star Game, which has historically been an event where most will only play at about half of their usual intensity to let their fellow players shine. Five players cracked the 30-point barrier, and Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves scored an eye-popping 50 points.
