With the Super Bowl in the books, we can transfer our attention to the NBA and NHL before springtime kicks MLB back into gear. Monday we have three games on the docket. Leading the way in terms of goal scoring appears to be the Philadelphia Flyers at the Detroit Red Wings as well the Florida Panthers at the Toronto Maple Leafs. Let’s breakdown the action and make some Ice Picks!
Florida Panthers(28-17-5) at Toronto Maple Leafs(28-17-7)
Leafs/Panthers could very well turn into the game of the night. Both teams excel in the goal-scoring department and both teams are vying for playoff spots. An identical GF/GM mark of 3.60 parks both teams second in league scoring. In terms of high danger chances for, both clubs rank in the top half of the league. The Leafs rank 2nd with 74 goals converted, good for a 53.24 rate while the Panthers are 12th with 61 goals translating out to a rate of 52.59.
Plenty of options to choose on both sides, we can start with Austin Matthews. Matthews has lived up to his elite status scoring 10 goals paired with a very high total of shots on goal(56) in his last 10 contests.
William Nylander is within mid-range pricing and has been converting on his chances. He has been good for seven goals and 36 shots over his last 10.
Defenseman Rasmus Sandin has filled in admirably of late for the “Buds” and is currently getting some looks on the 2nd powerplay unit. four points along with nine shots and five blocks spanned over 10 games is decent value.
Philadelphia Flyers(28-17-5) at Detroit Red Wings(12-37-4)
The Detroit Red Wings host the Flyers, who despite their 10-13-3 road record, will be looking to exploit a team has had their fair share of struggles defensively this season as evidenced by their league-high ga/gm mark of 3.83.
Philly is averaging a modest 3.00 goals per game for the month of January and ranks 14th in goals per game for the entirety of the season to date with a tally of 3.12.
Plenty of mid-tiered options on the Flyers. A player that goes under the radar is winger James van Riemsdyk. He can, at the minimum, give us shots on net which over the last 10 games has been at a good clip(23) resulting in five snipes.
Travis Konecny is a tick pricier(depending on which site). He has six goals, two assists and 27 shots on target over the course of his last 10 games.
Defensemen Matt Niskanen and Travis Sanheim of the Flyers are currently getting powerplay time on the Flyers’ second unit. They have a nice floor of shots and blocks to build off of.
