Joel Dorcas |November 27th, 2019

Because of the Thanksgiving Holiday, the usual schedule has been modified. As a result, Wednesday has a full offering of 13 games. The following will be where we pick players for roster construction: Florida Panthers at Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche and finally, the Carolina Hurricanes at the New York Rangers. Ler’s go down to ice level and make some Ice Picks!

CORE MUST-HAVES

Teuvo Teravainen W CAR $6,300

The Carolina Hurricanes continue to impress during the recent stretch of seven games with just one loss being their only blemish. The scoring trio of Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen are red-hot and leading the charge. They have combined for 11 points in their last three games. As for Teravainen, he leads the team in shots(22) in the last five games as well as registering two goals and six assists.

Tyson Barrie D TOR $4,800

Since cutting ties with former coach Mike Babcock the Leafs have strung together two straight victories on the road against a couple of good teams in the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche. New Coach Sheldon Keefe and the rejuvenated Leafs look to continue the improved play against a team in the Detroit Red Wings that give up the most goals per game in the NHL at 3.73. Tyson Barrie has benefited the most since the coaching change. He has two goals and three assists with 12 shots and five blocks in his last five games.

Lars Eller C WSH $5,100

Eller profiles to be a nice core play with a cheap price tag. Center Nicklas Backstrom is out due to injury and Lars Eller stands to benefit. Not only will he be bumped up to the second scoring line but he will also play first-line center on the league’s 7th ranked powerplay(23.8%). Over the last five games, Eller trails only Alex Ovechkin in the team lead for shots on goal with 18.

VALUE PLAYS

Brett Pesce D CAR $3,900

Pesce has certainly contributed plenty to the Hurricanes group of defenceman that has perhaps surpassed expectations. The Canes rank 7th in goals for per game at 3.42. They will be matched up against a Rangers squad that is way down the defensive ranks with a mark ok 3.57 goals allowed per contest which sits them 29th. Pesce provides a decent floor with shots and blocks. In his last five games, he has nine shots and 11 blocks as well as a goal and an assist.

Jason Spezza C TOR $3,000

Spezza is perhaps another player to benefit from the new bench leader. Also of note, Alexander Kerfoot will be out due to a two-game suspension for a hit from behind on Avs defensemen Jack Johnson. Spezza, in limited ice time, has two goals and two assists over his last five games. On top of being poor in their own end, the Red Wings are killing penalties at only a 73.5% rate, 27th worst in the league.

Darnell Nurse D EDM $4,300

Nurse continues to lead the Oilers defensive group during this incredible turnaround season. The Oilers are currently 3-and-1 during this road trip and will look to keep it going against Colorado who ranks 15th in goals against per game at 3.00. Nurse will chip in the odd goal or assist but is more known for blocks and shots which he has eight and 13 of respectively in his last five. The Oiler were winners the last time these two teams met, 6-2 in Edmonton, November 14th.
