New York Jets vs. Philadelphia Eagles: Week 5 Preview

The Philadelphia Eagles picked up an enormous win last Thursday in Green Bay to keep themselves alive in the NFC East. The Jets, meanwhile, are fresh off a bye and looking to rebound from their disappointing 0-3 start.

Sam Darnold has been ruled out for this week, so Luke Falk gets the nod again. Darnold has been out since Week 1 after being diagnosed with mononucleosis. Backup Trevor Siemian broke his ankle in Week 2, forcing the NFL debut of Falk, who struggled to get anything going against an elite Patriots defense later on in Week 3, completing just 12 of 22 passes for 96 yards and an interception. The Jets also have David Fales on their roster.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Carson Wentz has been solid through the first quarter of the season, completing 60.7% of his passes for 963 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. However, Wentz has played even better than the stats show. Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson have each missed time and drops have handicapped the Eagles offense (they had seven in Week 3). Nelson Agholor and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside each dropped passes in Weeks 2 and 3 that would have been game-winning touchdowns, so Wentz has certainly outperformed his stat line. In fact, Pro Football Focus ranked Wentz as the top quarterback through four weeks.

Past Results:

Neither Carson Wentz nor Sam Darnold has played their Week 5 opponent in their career. In the matchup of the century between Sam Bradford vs. Ryan Fitzpatrick in the 2015 season, the Eagles came away with the win by a score of 24-17. Former NFL running back Ryan Mathews had a big game on the ground, carrying the ball 24 times for 108 yards with two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. Believe it or not, the Jets have never beaten the Eagles, who are 10-0-0 all-time in this matchup.

Betting Odds

Point Spread: Eagles -13.5 (-113), Jets +13.5 (-105)

Moneyline: PHI: (-660)| NYJ: (+550)

Over/Under: 44.5 (-105)

Parting Words

The Eagles often get off to slow starts and I expect them to do the same, falling behind in the first quarter. However, Wentz and the Eagles will find their groove and roll into their second straight win.

Prediction:

Final Score: Eagles 28, Jets 10
