On the surface, it appears like the New York Jets still have a kicking problem. However, let’s dig deeper into their kicking woes from Week 1.
The Missed PAT
The point after a touchdown is one of the easiest kicks in the National Football League. Even though the league moved it back, a high percentage are still made. However, it’s not as automatic.
When Kaare Vedvik missed the PAT in the first quarter, Jets fans were probably ready to throw things at their televisions, or puke from the knots in their stomachs. It appears as if he left points off the board, but in reality, there’s no way of knowing how it would’ve turned out.
Let’s say everything plays out the same, with the exception that he makes the PAT. So, he makes the PAT, misses the FG, and the Jets score a touchdown. They then likely don’t go for two, because he made the first PAT, and that means the score is either the same or one point lower.
The Missed Field Goal
When you look at the missed field goal, it’s not his fault. It was botched from the word go. The snap was terrible, and Lachlan Edwards couldn’t get the ball turned into the proper kicking position.
The Conclusion
Even though they will likely change kickers, it’s a huge overreaction to cut Vedvik after this game, given the circumstances. Vedvik is the least of the Jets worries at this point. Another bad week, sure, but right now, there’s a lot more on the plate that needs to be fixed than just changing kickers.
