New Jersey Devils: Fantasy Hockey Forward Targets in 2022-23

New Jersey Devils: Fantasy Hockey Forward Targets in 2022-23

After another season to forget, the New Jersey Devils are poised for a big bounce-back campaign heading into next year. In addition to star players such as Jack Hughes, Dougie Hamilton, and Jesper Bratt, the Devils also boast a deep and talented forward core.

At the very heart of this group lies Yegor Sharangovich, Dawson Mercer, and Nathan Bastian. They are excellent players and poised to “tip the scale” on fantasy boards heading into 2022-23. Let us dive in and take a closer look at three forwards that can significantly impact your fantasy team.

Be sure to keep up with all of our NHL coverage.

Yegor Sharangovich

First up on our list is talented Belarussian forward Yegor Sharangovich. Now entering his third season, Sharangovich looks to firmly establish himself as an impactful top-6 winger and “go-to” offensive force. Standing at 6-foot-2, 196 pounds, this is a player with size, speed, offensive fortitude, and a real intriguing piece on all fantasy fronts. The 2021-22 NHL campaign saw Sharangovich score 24 goals, 22 assists, and 46 points in 76 games. With another year of experience under his belt, look for a bump up in various offensive categories for Sharangovich on a Devils team that’s vastly improved heading into next season.

As we inch closer to October, all indications point towards Sharangovich being slotted in on the Devils’ second line alongside Jack Hughes and Dawson Mercer. In addition, he should also get a clean look on New Jersey’s top power-play unit with the likes of Dougie Hamilton, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, and the Hughes. This is fantastic news (and exposure) for those targeting Sharangovich. Although Sharangovich certainly is not a sexy pick by any means, he should be available in the later rounds of fantasy leagues. Target him if you can, folks!

Dawson Mercer

Dawson Mercer represents one of the Devils’ most talented and coveted youngsters. At the tender age of 20, the Carbonear, Newfoundland native, has quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in New Jersey and will enter the 2022-23 season with hefty expectations. After suiting up for all 82 games for the Devils last season, Mercer hit the ground running as a rookie. His statistical production includes 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points with 16:32 worth of ice time. Not too shabby for a rookie, wouldn’t you say?

The Devils’ front office and coaching staff are massive advocates for Dawson’s game, and for good reason. This is a player just getting started and would be a welcome member of your fantasy team. He can score, put up points, drive play, and is going to get better as his career progresses. Of course, it goes without saying that Mercer would be an absolutely phenomenal add in fantasy. So don’t hesitate – pounce immediately!

Nathan Bastian

Last, but certainly not least, is Nathan Bastian. Born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Bastian appears on this list as a useful late-round acquisition to your fantasy squad. After scoring 12 goals last season in limited minutes with both the Devils and Seattle Kraken, Bastian possesses the skill set, and offensive upside for a real, interesting fantasy add. He’s smart, real shifty with the puck, and makes good decisions in all three zones. If you are looking for a player who should add a much-needed “boost” offensively, especially while prioritizing goals, look no further than Bastian.

After logging 11:54 worth of ice time in 2021-22, Bastian should receive a “bump up” in ice time next year. At 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, Bastian uses his size and speed effectively to drive play and make things happen. This kids’ game continues to evolve and develop, which is excellent news for both the Devils and your fantasy team. To think he can flirt with 20 goals in 2022-23 is a realistic aspiration for Bastian. So don’t sleep on a 24-year-old who is poised for a big campaign next season in “The Swamp.”
