There are rumors that the National Arena League and Indoor Football League have been in discussions about a potential merger. The intial rumor came about when Carolina Cobras and Jacksonville Sharks part-owner Rob Storm made a trip to Arizona.
The two leagues are currently debating whether to use arena or indoor rules and the prices the superleague would charge expansion teams to join, multiple reports say. Should both sides come to an agreement and the merger does happen, the new league would have a total of 16 teams. That number is expected to grow, however.
National Arena League commissioner Chris Siegfried told MSG Networks that he hopes to have up to 10 teams in 2020, which means four new teams would come into play. A trademark has already been filed for a team in Nashville and Siegfried also said they were in talks with bringing in a team to Tampa, FL.
There have been no expansion rumors from the Indoor Football League, but there could be some coming shortly after United Bowl IX.
The last time two arena leagues merged was back in 2008 when the United Football League merged with the Extreme Football League to create the Indoor Football League, which may now be merging into something special.
