MLB Trade Deadline Preview: Seattle Mariners

MLB Trade Deadline Preview: Seattle Mariners

We all know Jerry Dipoto loves to make moves. He is like the guy who gets bored in your fantasy league and DMs you at 2:45 am looking for a starter. With all that being said, the Seattle Mariners have actually been pretty good this year. They have some good young pieces and a couple of veterans they could easily move. While this year may not be theirs, they have the talent to be playoff contenders.

While a team with 50 wins coming out of the All-Star break would usually be considered buyers, the Mariners are a different animal. The team is young with a few veterans sprinkled in. It isn’t likely that the Mariners are willing to give up any top prospects. They won’t be dealing Jarred Kelenic or Julio Rodriguez from their outfield. Likewise, George Kirby and Emerson Hancock can safely figure their debuts will be in Seattle. If the Mariners play their cards right, they could have a top farm system and a young core of players that could be perennial postseason participants.

Trade Candidates

Kyle Seager

The veteran third baseman is second on the team in home runs (17), and also second in RBIs (52). He hasn’t been stellar this season but could be a great addition to a team looking for a solid left-handed bat who can also play a good defensive third base. Seager’s contract is up at the end of the year, so although he will be a rental, the Mariners could get a few pieces for him and send him somewhere where he could make the postseason for the first time in his career.

Mitch Haniger

Here is the guy who is first in HRs (22) and RBIs (58) on the team. Seattle has great depth in the outfield with the aforementioned Kelenic and Rodriguez along with Jake Fraley and Kyle Lewis. Haniger is 30 years old and healthy. He also has one more year before hitting free agency which will up his stock and bring more of a return for the Mariners. There are plenty of teams looking for outfield help. While Haniger doesn’t play much centerfield anymore, he could man the position in a pinch.

Kendall Graveman

Since becoming a full-time reliever this season, Graveman has been great. He sports a 0.93 ERA with a 27/5 K/BB rate in 29 innings. The sinker has also been working as the Mariners’ closer has allowed just two long balls this season. Most teams look to bolster their bullpens at this time of year and while Graveman is a rental, he has found his niche with the Seattle Mariners as a closer and will be very valuable as July 30th approaches.
