MLB Postpones Reds/Pirates Games After Player Tests Positive For COVID-19

MLB: Reds/Pirates postponed: Nick Senzel

Saturday and Sunday games this weekend between the Pirates and Reds in Cincinnati have been postponed due to a Reds player testing positive for COVID-19. Major League Baseball continues to take precautions to slow any potential spread in the wake of a litany of positive tests from teams in Miami and St. Louis.

Per the rules of confidentiality, neither a team nor MLB can announce a player by name as being the source of a positive test. There was some speculation with regards to the timing of Friday night’s announcement after the Reds’ 8-1 win over Pittsburgh. Immediately after the final out, third base coach J.R. House met center fielder Nick Senzel on the field and accompanied him to the clubhouse. They bypassed the traditional on-field handshake line with teammates. Senzel angrily threw his glove against the wall of the dugout before continuing down the tunnel.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday. It was supposed to be the first day that every MLB team would be in action since July 29. That was the last time they took the field. Baseball had reported no positive tests in nearly two weeks except for a member of the Cardinals coaching staff, who tested positive on Thursday but had already been in isolation and did not travel with the team to Chicago.

The Reds and Pirates are expected to make up the Saturday and Sunday games in a double-header on Monday. That plan is assuming there are no new positive tests.
