Wilson was born on Nov. 7, 1999, in Andalusia, AL. He has spent multiple years playing for the University of South Alabama and it is finally time for him to begin his professional career. In 2021, Wilson is racking up the accolades early. He is a Baseball America Preseason First-Team All-American, D-I Preseason Third-Team All-American, and the Preseason Sun-Belt Conference Player of the Year.

Strengths

Wilson is a very complete player. He is a powerful hitter, generating most of his power with his core from which he creates a great amount of torque. If he can limit his swings and misses, Wilson could turn into one of the strongest hitters in the majors. His hitting can be inconsistent against pitches below the zone, but when he makes contact the ball travels a long way.

Wilson also does many things well in the field. The lefty has a great arm and can make accurate and fast throws to all bases with ease to prevent runners from advancing. He can be a candidate to play either right or left field, but his lack of speed makes center field duties unlikely.

Weaknesses

Although Wilson is athletic, he is not the fastest on the bases. Out of the batter’s box, he is slow and will not be able to outrun many throws. Another area of concern for Wilson is that he strikes out a lot. Many of the pitches that victimized him were below the zone and he would swing and miss, but if he finds a pitch he likes, with his power it will be gone. Wilson also does a bit of a toe-tap before his swing, but it has changed over the years. His tap is inconsistent, though, and could create problems for him if he does not find that consistency.

Pro Comparison: Eddie Rosario

A comparison that Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline made that makes a lot of sense is Rosario. Both players are around 6-foot-2. Wilson will likely hit the ball harder with his heavier frame and will likely outshine Rosario’s home run numbers. These two are also alike because of their fielding similarities. Each is above average, but not quite elite in that regard.

Draft Projection: Round 1, Pick 26, Minnesota Twins

Wilson is a powerful hitter and if he’s available at the 26th pick, it would be hard for the Twins to pass on him. Although they have a few outfielders near the top of their prospect rankings, Wilson provides intriguing value as both a fielder and hitter and that versatility would be too much for them to let him slip by.
