Milwaukee Brewers Top 5 Prospects Post-Trade Deadline

Milwaukee Brewers Top 5 prospects post-trade deadline

The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the best teams in baseball this year. That is due mainly to their three-headed monster at the top of their rotation in Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, and Freddy Peralta. In the minors, the Brew Crew doesn’t have a lot of depth in the pitching department. However, they do have very good hitters at the top including three outfielders.

Garrett Mitchell OF

Hit: 55
Power: 50
Run: 70
Arm: 60
Field: 60

Milwaukee’s first-round pick last year out of UCLA has looked excellent this season at two stops. While the average isn’t quite there yet at Double-A, Mitchell is still walking at a 12.8 percent rate for Biloxi. Altogether, the centerfielder has eight homers and 14 steals with a .919 OPS. Considering his offense was originally a slight question, the Brewers should be encouraged. Speed and defense are not a problem for the 6-foot-3 outfielder. He covers a ton of ground and has a strong, accurate arm.

Brice Turang SS

Hit: 60
Power: 40
Run: 60
Arm: 55
Field: 55

The Brewers took a skinny High School kid out of Santiago HS in California back in 2018 with the 21st overall pick. Turang is still thin and wiry, but at 21, he just got a promotion to Triple-A Nashville. Like Mitchell, speed and defense are central to Turang’s game. He has the wheels to put up 25-30 steals at the next level especially with his aggressiveness on the basepaths. The Brewers also feel he can easily stick at shortstop. He has excellent range and a solid arm. Home run power will likely never be a part of Turang’s skillset, but he profiles to have doubles power with a good approach and above-average exit velocities.

ETA: 2022

Hedbert Perez OF

Hit: 55
Power: 50
Run: 60
Arm: 55
Field: 55

The Brewers signed Perez in July 2019 at just 16 years old out of Venezuela. The undersized (5’10, 160 lbs) outfielder plays much bigger and has surprising raw power. He employs a quick left-handed stroke and the ball jumps off of his bat. In 18 games in Rookie ball this season, Perez is slashing .342/.385/.589 with four homers and two steals. He has the speed and instincts to play centerfield and his arm plays anywhere in the outfield. Perez is looking like a five-tool player already and could move up quickly if he continues to hit.

ETA: 2023

Ethan Small LHP

Fastball: 55
Curveball: 55
Changeup: 60
Command: 50

Small doesn’t blow up the radar gun as his heater sits 89-92. However, the lefty out of Mississippi State has a knack for pitching. His changeup and curveball are both above average and he tunnels them well. Between Double-A and Triple-A this season, Small has a 1.77 ERA and has struck out 73 in 56 innings while allowing just one long ball. The 30 walks may be a little concerning, and the 2019 first-round pick needs to work on trusting his stuff if he wants to succeed at the major league level.

ETA: 2022

Sal Frelick OF

Hit: 60
Power: 45
Run: 70
Arm: 50
Field: 55

The Boston College outfielder was just selected in the first round less than a month ago. Still, he has shown he is pro-ready. In Rookie ball, the lefty is 7-for-12 with a couple of steals in three games. He has also thrown out two baserunners from centerfield already making an immediate impact on the field as well as at bat and on the bases. Frelick is a polished player and has all five tools. He is comparable to Andrew Benintendi when the Kansas City Royals outfielder came out of college and has the skills to move up to the majors soon.

ETA: 2023

What Does the Future Hold?

If Perez can move up the ranks despite his age, he, Frelick, and Mitchell could all be in the outfield for the Brewers by 2023. A couple of southpaws, Antoine Kelly and Aaron Ashby, along with catcher Mario Feliciano are in the top 10. However, they have not performed well so far this season.
