Miami Dolphins acquire Matt Breida from 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers traded running back Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.

The Dolphins gave the 49ers a fifth-round draft pick, pick number 153 overall, in exchange for Breida. If the 49ers hadn’t made the trade for the pick, then their next pick would have been pick number 210, which would have meant San Francisco gone 184 picks between selections. It would have been the longest wait between picks in the same draft in history, according to Nick Wagoner and Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.

The 49ers used the 153rd pick to select West Virginia offensive tackle Colton McKivitz. The 49ers cleared $3.259 million in salary and avoided carrying any dead cap, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.

Breida had 123 carries for 623 yards and a touchdown last year. That was down from 2018 when he had 153 carries for 814 yards and three touchdowns. Over the last three seasons, Breida has rushed for 1,902 yards and six touchdowns.

Breida is a good addition for the Dolphins. He will be a big help in the backfield after Miami lost Kenyan Drake via trade. Breida will add some depth and be another option for the Dolphins first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa.
