Mets Look to Be Favorites to Sign George Springer, per MLB Insider

The New York Mets are under new ownership and figure to be in on every big-name free agent that’s on the market, and George Springer might be the guy that lands in Queens, according to an insider.

ESPN’s Buster Olney said on 98.7 ESPN’s “Carlin” that he believes Springer will end up with the Mets. “I’m just about ready to bet the family farm that the Mets wind up with Springer,” Olney said.

The Mets seem like the best spot for Springer other than the Toronto Blue Jays, as there just isn’t a huge market for a center fielder. Jackie Bradley Jr. is an example of a cheaper option and he is one of the most elite defensive outfielders in the league.

The Chicago White Sox, who were in the market for a right fielder, are off the board now as a potential suitor because they just signed Adam Eaton to a one-year deal to come back and start at Guaranteed Rate Field.

There have been reports that New York is focused more on signing James McCann than J.T. Realmuto to be their catcher. McCann would cost less money than Realmuto and would theoretically allow Steve Cohen to sign Springer to a larger deal. Springer had a very successful start to his career in Houston, winning the 2017 World Series Most Valuable Player Award and earning three All-Star appearances. He also took home two Silver Slugger awards.

Brandon Nimmo is currently the starting center fielder and the Mets like him anywhere in the order as an on-base machine, but Springer is certainly an upgrade.
