Mets Fans Shouldn’t Expect to Sign Trevor Bauer and J.T. Realmuto

Why you sjouldn't expect the Mets to sign Bauer or Realmuto

Mets fans are the happiest they have been since 2015 with their new owner Steve Cohen being officially approved as the owner. But there are some reasons why fans shouldn’t get their hopes up on Cohen signing Trevor Bauer and J.T. Realmuto.

The Wilpon era in New York has come to end, and Mets fans can’t contain their excitement. In comes Cohen, a lifelong Mets fan who’s worth over $14 billion. That is nearly $10 billion more than the second richest owner in baseball so Cohen has the money other owners don’t have to bring in high impact free agents to build a World Series-caliber team.

But, just because he has the money doesn’t mean he is going to go crazy with it, according to SNY’s Andy Martino.

Sandy’s Back

Cohen hired Sandy Alderson to be the team president partly because he has experience dealing with all sorts of payrolls–some big and some small.

Martino alluded to the fact that Cohen will look to spend his money responsibly this winter. Free agency begins on Sunday night. “Once Cohen takes over, he does not plan to spend wildly on the top end of the free-agent market. Their spending will be targeted and strategic, consistent with Alderson’s style,” Martino wrote.

What this statement should tell Mets fans is to stop with the notion that it’s a slam dunk that Cohen will bring Realmuto and Bauer to the Mets this offseason. It’s more likely that Cohen goes all-in on one of the two or the other marquee free agent this winter like George Springer.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s exciting to see an owner who is a true Mets fan and wants to spend money and is ready to win.

He’s already showing he’s a great guy and will be an amazing owner of the New York Mets. He has already pledged $24.5 million to better the communities around Citi Field and to help the ballpark workers.

Buckle up Mets fans, you’re going to have a real team to root for again and it starts this winter. But he’s going to spend his money in a very calculated and smart fashion.
