“Masked Theis” Following in Kyrie Irving’s Footsteps

Celtic forward Daniel Theis took a shot to the nose in the closing minute of the first quarter while facing the Utah Jazz on Dec. 15.

Theis later visited the same doctor that Kyrie Irving did to get fitted with a protective mask, which Theis has sported the past three games. After the consultation, it was reported that he will have to wear the fitted mask for three to four weeks while his nose heals.

In his first game with the mask against the Chicago Bulls, the German native posted his first ever double-double with 10 points to go with 15 rebounds in what was also a career high 24 minutes of action.

Two days later, the 25-year-old tied a season high of 12 points and shot 4-6 from the field in a loss to the Washington Wizards.

This, of course, comes in the wake of Irving’s injury, where he was able to live up to the “Masked Kyrie” name given to him back in 2012 when he achieved a then-career-high 41 points in Madison Square Garden behind an all-black mask.

Hopefully, the 6-foot-9 forward will be able to sustain this high level of play going forward, as the Celtics have found themselves in a bit of a rough patch recently with a 5-5 record over their last 10 games.
