On Thursday night, the Seattle Mariners continued to build for a playoff push. The team acquired reliever Diego Castillo in exchange for reliever JT Chargois and infield prospect Austin Shenton. The trade was Seattle’s third in as many days with the trade deadline now less than 24 hours away.

In five major league seasons, Castillo has posted a 2.99 ERA with Tampa Bay. The right-hander also has 26 saves in that span, including a career-high 14 this year. Throughout his career with Tampa Bay, the Dominican native has been one of their most consistent pieces. He will now head to Seattle and be a key piece as the Mariners look to end a 20-year playoff drought.

Return Package

Although the Mariners have improved their bullpen, they did give up two quality pieces.

Through 31 relief appearances this year, Chargois posted a 3.00 ERA. After spending last season in Japan, he has struck out 29 batters in 30 innings of work. His primary pitch is the slider which he has used 69 percent of the time this year, the fourth-highest rate in the majors. As the Rays hope to make a deep playoff run, Chargois could play an important role.

Joining Chargois is Shenton, who was the Mariners’ No. 17 prospect. The former fifth-round pick is batting .300 between two levels this year and has driven in 61 runs. He has consistently shown the ability to make hard contact in the minors and has an advanced approach. The 23-year-old brings a lot of upside to a deep Tampa Bay system.

With this move, the Mariners were able to improve their bullpen and the Rays added a quality prospect.
