Los Angeles Rams 2021 NFL Draft Recap

Los Angeles Rams 2021 NFL Draft Recap

The Rams are all in. Sending starting quarterback Jared Goff along with two first-round picks for Matthew Stafford makes that quite clear. The problem lies in the fact that outside of Stafford’s playoff experience, the Rams lost their defensive coordinator both on and off the field (Brandon Staley to the Los Angeles Chargers and John Johnson III to the Cleveland Browns). The defense was the identity of this team last year, so making sure it is close to the same level would be crucial for a Super Bowl. Stafford will also need extra protection. If not a high pick starter, then later-round depth would be critical to remain relevant in the playoffs. Did the Rams repair their roster to go all the way? Let’s find out.

Best Pick: Robert Rochell (Round 4, Pick 130)

Rochell is a steal at this spot. It is not a fit for him, but the value was too good to pass up. Rochell fits best in a zone-heavy scheme, given his lack of play speed, but the Rams will make the most of him. For now, he will be solid depth. With Jalen Ramsey as a mentor, the ceiling might be attainable.

Worst Pick: Chatarius Atwell (Round 2, Pick 57)

“Tutu” Atwell was an interesting selection, with Terrace Marshall Jr. and Dyami Brown still on the board. Losing Josh Reynolds to the Tennessee Titans certainly hurt, so it was a surprise that the Rams did not address the position with a similar prospect. Atwell is miniature in stature with ball security issues. Obviously, Los Angeles wanted to get faster, but faster does not mean much when the ball is dropped or fumbled.

Grade: F

Sleeper Pick: Jacob Harris (Round 4, Pick 141)

The Rams lost a vital weapon in Gerald Everett this offseason. Harris is a mean, aggressive, athletic option at tight end. The former UCF wide receiver will fit perfectly into the Everett role and provide Stafford with a sneakily elite weapon. Although the Rams whiffed on the Atwell pick, they certainly scored with this Harris selection. His impact will be felt in small doses until he turns it on in the playoffs.

Grade: B+

Summary

The Rams failed their team with how they drafted this year. Once again, the line depth is terrible, and once again, head coach Sean McVay chose to avoid addressing it. Stafford must be feeling a bit neglected after seeing pick after pick transform into potential roster cuts rather than potential starters. Unfortunately, the Rams blew many of their day-three selections on roster cuts. Many needs are still present after several picks went down the toilet.

Overall grade: C
