LAFC Loses at Home to the Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers traveled to the Banc of California stadium for this round of the U.S Open Cup. After a heated matchup last time out, the Timbers and LAFC were set up for another fierce matchup.

The game started fast. Saying it was an end-to-end match is probably an understatement. Both sides had quality opportunities when halftime rolled around.

The Portland Timbers generated the two best opportunities of the half. Both of those chances went to Larrys Mabiala, who couldn’t quite convert, as Pablo Sisniega had yet another incredible half for the Black and Gold.

Starting out the second half, the tempo didn’t change much. Both teams still played at a breakneck pace up and down the field. Jordan Harvey made a big stop in the 71st minute, but it was Harvey who deflected the ball to Jeremy Ebobisse which led to the Timbers first goal. LAFC had a chance at the very end, but Carlos Vela’s bicycle kick was blocked.

Overall, it was a really tough loss for the Black and Gold to swallow. Although the cross-town rival Galaxy is technically the biggest rival for LAFC, the Portland Timbers are making a strong case to take their place. With a heated game last time out and a loss at the Banc this time, fans and players alike can’t wait to see Portland again. Unfortunately, it may not be until the playoffs, if Portland even makes the playoffs, that is.
