?If you’re a fan of the Minnesota Vikings, the signing of Kirk Cousins had to invoke a bit of excitement in you. After Teddy Bridgewater almost lost his leg before the start of the 2017 season, then trading for an equally injury-prone QB in Sam Bradford, it was certainly encouraging to finally have stability at the quarterback position.
?Despite his first season in Minnesota sitting behind an offensive line that lacked in pass-protection, the Vikings witnessed their franchise quarterback emerge. For those who may have played street hockey with a trash can in goal, the Vikings season may bring back some memories of your childhood. As watching the likes of Mike Remmers and Tom Compton try to block and give a clean pocket to Kirk Cousins were reminiscent of the big greenish trash cans sitting in goal. In other words, they were utterly useless.
After the dust had settled on the 2018 season, Cousins ended with 4,298 yards, the second highest of his career. 30 touchdowns, the highest of his career, and 10 interceptions. The third-highest rating in his career at 99.7, and the highest completion percentage of his career at 70.1%. While the interceptions were a bit concerning, but otherwise that’s a stat-line of a franchise QB.
?Sure, Kirk Cousins may need better pocket presence, anyone will admit that. However, when you don’t have a clean pocket, it seems rather difficult to become consistently aware of how your line will block when you drop back to pass.
?Another thing that could help Cousins is the addition of another weapon. The first ones to come to mind? DeSean Jackson. With Jackson looking like his days in Tampa Bay are numbered, he should be on the Vikings’ radar. The two have chemistry, going back to their days in Washington. With a need at the third receiver spot on the Vikings, Jackson makes all the sense in the world.
Kirk Cousins is the guy for the Vikings moving forward. He’s not going anywhere, so don’t even entertain that possibility. All he needs is a line and his main squeeze and you’ll see, you’ll all see.
