Kiké Hernandez’s Unforgettable 2021 Postseason

Over the last few weeks, the Boston Red Sox have proven many critics wrong. The offense has been on fire in the playoffs, as they have pulled off several thrilling wins. One key to their success is Kiké Hernández. The 30-year-old has been tough to keep off the bases, and is terrorizing pitchers. During his recent stretch, he has also joined some unique company.

Through five postseason games, Hernández is batting .435. The former sixth-round pick has been Boston’s most dangerous bat, driving in six runs. Sunday and Monday Hernández tallied eight hits; most by a player in a two-game span in playoff history. When the Red Sox have needed someone to step up offensively, he has been that guy.

After spending six years in Los Angeles, the San Juan native was no stranger to the increased pressure. During his tenure with the Dodgers, Hernández hit eight postseason home runs. Last season, he helped LA end their 32-year title drought and became a World Series champion. That experience has been key over the last week after the Red Sox lost the first game of the ALDS 5-0 to division rival Tampa Bay.

While the super-utility man has been impressive, he has not had to rely on his power. Just five of his 10 hits have gone for extra bases, while striking out only twice. From the second spot of the order, Hernández has sparked the Red Sox offense. In clutch situations, he has also shown a flair for dramatics.

What Hernández Means to the Red Sox

On Tuesday night, Hernández delivered the biggest hit of his Boston career. With the game tied at five, the Houston Astros draftee stepped to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, sending the Red Sox to ALCS. For the second straight night, Boston won in walk-off fashion as their unforgettable run continued. At the center of their success was Hernandez.

In his first playoff run with his current team, he is rising to the occasion. After going hitless in Game 1, he’s totaled nine hits in his last 16 at bats, including seven hits consecutively, a Red Sox record. He has embraced playing in Boston, and said so after the game.

In a season where Boston has proved critics wrong, their story is far from over. On Friday, Hernández will be looking to continue his recent run against either the Astros or Chicago White Sox. Regardless of the opponent, the Red Sox’s depth will be tested. If Hernandez can continue his recent performance, however, their offense will be hard to stop.

While the start of the ALCS is still two days away, Tuesday is a game that Hernández will never forget.
