Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes exits game vs. Broncos, quickly ruled out with knee injury

Kansas City Chiefs fans are holding their breath all of a sudden, as reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes went down with a knee injury early in Thursday night’s game against the Broncos and was instantly ruled out with a right knee injury.

Mahomes showed some serious emotion as he was down in pain and the team medical staff appeared to re-adjust his knee and prevent any further damage or dislocation. The cart came onto the field for Mahomes, but he limped off.

Mahomes had been dealing with a right ankle injury that had been causing worry for Chiefs fans, as Mahomes hadn’t been playing MVP-caliber football in the teams’ past two games which saw them lose to the Colts and Texans and fall to 4-2.

In 2019, Mahomes was named an All-Pro and Pro Bowler, plus was dubbed league MVP at the end of the year. He went 12-4 in 16 starts, completing 383 of 580 passes for 5,097 yards and a league-leading 50 scores while tossing a dozen interceptions. In his first six games this year, he was 147-for-230 with a league-leading 2,104 yards, 14 scores, and an interception. The mobile quarterback also rushed 60 times for 272 yards and a pair of scores last year, and 16 times for 80 yards so far this year.

Matt Moore entered the game when Mahomes limped off the field. We’ve seen several back-up quarterbacks so far this year, as the Panthers went from Cam Newton to Kyle Allen, the Saints from Drew Brees to Teddy Bridgewater, the Titans from Marcus Mariota to Ryan Tannehill, the Colts from Andrew Luck to Jacoby Brissett, the Jaguars from Nick Foles to Gardner Minshew, the Jets from Sam Darnold to Trevor Siemian to Luke Falk and back to Darnold, the Giants from Eli Manning to Daniel Jones, the Bears from Mitchell Trubisky to Chase Daniel, the Redskins from Case Keenum to Colt McCoy to Dwayne Haskins to who knows who, the Dolphins from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Josh Rosen and back to Fitzpatrick, and the Steelers from Ben Roethlisberger to Mason Rudolph to Devlin Hodges.

Should Mahomes’ injury turn out to be as serious as it initially appears, there’s an extremely valid and terrifying case to be made in regards to the Madden Curse.

It’s worth noting that footage of Mahomes walking to the X-ray room does not show much of a limp, but nonetheless, with Mahomes already ruled out, his day is done and fans across all of football will hold their breath as we await an update on Mahomes.

The Chiefs lead the Broncos by a score of 20-6 at halftime.
