Kansas City Chiefs Exercise Patrick Mahomes’s Option

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t leaving Kansas City any time soon. The Chiefs have picked up Mahomes’s fifth-year option.

The move keeps Mahomes with the Chiefs through the 2021 season. Now, the top priority for the Chiefs is to get a long-term deal with Mahomes done. The Chiefs also want to work out a long-term deal with defensive tackle Chris Jones.

“I would like to think that we’re fairly confident, and we have a lot of time,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said on Sunday. “[They’re] cornerstones in this organization. We do have some time, and now that the draft is over, and the free agency period here with the pandemic and the virtual draft, there was certainly a lot of distractions. ”

Veach added, “But now that this is behind us here, we have a window now that we can kind of reset as an organization. We have a lot of time and this will be the focus of where we are to make sure we get these guys locked up and head into training camp, whenever that is, ready to rock and roll. Again, you can never put a definitive answer on anything, but we are certainly hopeful and confident, and we’re going to put in a lot of work from now until the start of camp.”

Mahomes is deserving of a long-term deal. He was the NFL MVP in 2018 after throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns. Last year, he threw for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns and helped the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl title in 50 years.

Mahomes’s next long-term deal could be worth up to $40 million per season. The Chiefs should get the deal done soon because Mahomes deserves it.
