Kansas City Chiefs: Could Cody Thompson snatch up a spot on the roster?

Cody Thompson is an undrafted free agent who was brought in this year from Toledo to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Thompson has posted great statistics so far, making the most of his opportunities, to say the least.

The Toledo product was a great player who scored lots of touchdowns during his time in college and, given his performances during the preseason games, he could make an impact for the Chiefs in the coming years.

He actually led the Chiefs in receiving yards in the game against the Steelers, grabbing seven receptions for 69 yards. The week prior, he caught both passes sent his way for 19 yards.

We can easily say that he was the best player of the Steelers game, even though this game was a snoozefest.

There are a lot of other talented wide receivers on the roster who are battling for a roster spot, but Thompson is standing out during his playtime and that is very important.

It shows character.

He got noticed.

He’s also a good kick returner

Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub was asked about Thompson and how his return skills make him valuable among a crowded receiver’s core.

“I like his effort, he’s got good ball skill,” Toub told NewsPressNow.com earlier this week. “He’s a good kick returner. We are developing him as a punt returner. He really wasn’t a punt returner (in college). He’s got upside.”

Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, and rookie Mecole Hardman will surely make the team but there are still a few spots left in the team. Gehrig Dieter is injured and hasn’t even played this preseason, which isn’t a good sign. Marcus Kemp‘s injury during the Steelers game might be somehow “a chance” for Thompson, even though the Chiefs brought back De’Anthony Thomas, who knows the playbook pretty well.

With Dieter and Kemp being pretty much out, Thompson and Byron Pringle can easily get the two open spots.

Even though Cody Thompson might not become a superstar right away, he handled pretty well the pressure of being an undrafted free agent playing his first games in the NFL, receiving passes from Mr. MVP.

And that is a very good sign for the future of the Chiefs.
