Kansas City Chiefs 2022 NFL Draft Recap

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs shook up the league after trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a boatload of draft picks. With the Chiefs having two top 50 picks and four in the top 100, the team set themselves up with young talent. With many people wondering what the team would do after paying Patrick Mahomes and how they would keep talent on the roster, this answered those questions. While the team suffered from a horrible defense the last few years, the front office prioritized that. At the same time, they needed new offensive weapons, and Brett Veach loaded up the roster. Furthermore, Veach hit a home run with his first four picks, and it gave the team new life going into the next season.

Best Pick: George Karlaftis (Round 1, Pick 30)

With many having Karlaftis being a top 15 pick, he did slip a little to the end of the first. With the Chiefs needing to get a new edge rusher Karlaftis was compared to a faster, more athletic, but less strong J.J. Watt. With the Chiefs needing desperate help with rushing, the passer Karlaftis can help. At the same time, he does need to get stronger for his game to take off.

Grade: A+

Worst Pick: Isaih Pacheco (Round 7, Pick 251)

The Chiefs need to get another running back that the team can rely on. With Clyde Edwards-Helaire being injury-prone, he will give the team 10-15 games a year. While the depth behind him isn’t any better, the team could have taken a stud back in the middle rounds. However, while Pachecho isn’t a bad back, this gets the work pick because it is a pressing need.  With Pachecho being 5’11 and 213Lbs, he is a bigger back that does it all, bringing him a high value to the team.

Sleeper Pick: Darian Kinnard (Round 5, Pick 145)

Kinnard will become the starting right tackle for the Chiefs, and it’s not going to be a competition. However, with Kinnard’s potential ceiling as a mid-level starter, he could become a standout on the Chiefs’ offensive line. While he will need to work on his footwork and pad level to reach his potential, he has a good starting level. However, if Kinnard becomes a long-term starter, he needs to work hard to refine his techniques for this to happen.

Grade: B+

Summary

Veach traded their star playmaker Hill sprinkled fairy dust on him, and turned him into five draft picks. With a better return on Hill than the Green Bay Packers got from trading Davante Adams, it set the team up with many options. While getting the picks is one thing hitting on all of them as Veach did was another. The team addressed all the crucial holes in the roster with big-time talents with the first three picks. Trent McDuffie is a star corner, Karlaftis can become dominant next to Chris Jones, and Skyy Moore is a great slot receiver or Z. With a ton of talent in this draft, the Chiefs hit on the first three picks and with the fourth added a starting safety.

Grade: A-
