Jones, Defense Help Stifle Panthers Comeback Hopes

The 5-3 Panthers were unable to execute a second-half comeback at Green Bay, falling to the 7-2 Packers.

It took until each team’s respective second drives for the score to change, as Allen and Rodgers matched touchdown drives in the first quarter. Allen hit wide receiver Curtis Samuel for a two-yard touchdown, which was promptly followed up by an Aaron Jones rushing touchdown.

It was tied at seven apiece after the first quarter of play, but Carolina took the early second-quarter lead with a 50-yard field goal from Joey Slye.

While Green Bay went three and out their first possession, they were able to capitalize on a Kyle Allen fumble. Aaron Jones capped off a six-play, 52-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run –– giving Green Bay a 14-10 lead.

That score would hold true going into the half.

The Packers opened up the second half by scoring 10 unanswered points following Jones’ third touchdown of the game, and a Mason Crosby field goal –– giving them a 24-10 lead after three quarters from Lambeau Field.

The Panthers were able to cut that deficit from 14 down to eight after Christian McCaffrey rushed for a three-yard score. But the two-point conversion try failed, and their goal-to-go situation failed at the end of the game, sealing a Packers 24-16 victory.

The win cemented Green Bay’s number one spot in the NFC North standings, and they will be on a bye next week while the Panthers will face the Atlanta Falcons in a divisional rivalry game next Sunday.
