So far this season, the Red Sox bullpen has been full of inconsistency. While Boston has played better of late, questions remain. One bright spot has been the performance of John Schreiber. The Michigan native has made 15 appearances during the 2022 campaign and has quietly been one of Boston’s most reliable arms. Although he only had 29 appearances in the majors entering this season, Schreiber is carving out a role in the Red Sox bullpen.
Through 15.1 innings of work this year, the former fifteenth-round pick has posted a 1.17 ERA and struck out 17 batters. In Schreiber’s fourth big league season, he is holding opponents to a .137 batting average and has shown excellent control. Although the season is far from over, Scheiber is making an impact while defying expectations.
Coming into the 2022 campaign, Schreiber was seen as a reliever who could provide depth. He was not expected to become a core piece after only making one appearance during the 2021 campaign. However, he has displayed above-average control and poise in high leverage situations. That has been welcoming for a Red Sox team that has struggled to close out games at times.
While his sample size is small, Schreiber will still get plenty of chances. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff but pitches to his strengths. The 28-year-old has a sweeping slider and sinking fastball that keeps hitters off-balance. His changeup has also been very effective and prevented batters from sitting on one pitch.

What To expect From Schreiber for the remainder of the season
Additionally, Schreiber has already tied his career-high for appearances in a single season. While he has allowed three base runners this month, the University of Northwestern Ohio product has been able to pitch out of trouble. He has earned Alex Cora‘s trust and added six holds to his resume after the 2022 campaign, with two in his career.
As the Red Sox look to climb in the standings, the performance of Schreiber will be key. For the moment, it appears they have caught lightning in a bottle with his emergence. After posting a 6.28 ERA with the Tigers, he is becoming an essential piece in Boston. If he can continue his impressive start, the Red Sox bullpen will have one less thing to worry about.
