Ja’Marr Chase Opts out of 2020 Season, Declares for NFL Draft

Ja’Marr Chase had a great end to his 2019 campaign. He culminated his season with a National Title where he caught nine passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns against Clemson. Well, unfortunately for LSU fans, that may have been Chase’s last game for the Tigers. Several reports are now coming out that he is opting out of the 2020 college season, though not all because of the pandemic. Several sources have said that Chase’s agents simply convinced him to skip his third collegiate season and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Chase seemingly had nothing to gain from this year. He had one of the best years a receiver has had in college football where he had 84 catches for 1,780 yards, and 20 touchdowns last year and also snagged 23 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns in 2018 as a freshman. He has firmly cemented himself as one of the top receivers in the draft and has followed Minnesota’s, Rashod Bateman, and Purdue’s, Rondale Moore as first-round receivers that have opted out. Chase currently ranks fourth on Todd McShay’s big board and fifth on The Draft Network’s.

The LSU offense was going to take a step back this year as they lost Joe Brady to the Carolina Panthers and Joe Burrow to the Cincinnati Bengals. The team lost it’s starting running back in Clyde Edwards-Helaire as well as several offensive linemen and key members of the defense. There was no reason for Chase to step foot on the field as he is locked as a first-round pick and potentially a top-five pick.

Myles Brennan now takes over as the LSU quarterback and will be without his number one receiver this year. While the loss of Chase is large, the Tigers still have plenty of reliable receivers, specifically Terrace Marshall Jr.and Racey McMath. Freshman tight end, Arik Gilbert will now have an expanded role while Koy Moore, Kayshon Boutte, and Trey Palmer get early snaps at the receiver position now.
