Hugo Lloris has represented France at the senior level since 2008. The veteran goalkeeper has amassed quite a career in both domestic and international play. Lloris, 35, has represented France in three World Cups, three Euros, and two Nations Leagues. In 2018, the longtime Tottenham goalie captained Les Bleus to their first World title in 20 years.
Lloris holds the record for most appearances for France as a captain with 108. He’s also France’s second-most capped player with over 130 appearances. Last October, Lloris captained his national team to its first Nations League title. With France qualified for this year’s World Cup Qatar, Lloris is set to captain the national team in a World Cup for the third consecutive time.
Will the 2022 World Cup be Lloris’ last?
At this point in his career, Lloris is not showing any signs of slowing down. In the English Premier League, he’s currently sixth in clean sheets with eight and seventh in saves with 72. His numbers are still in the respectable category despite Tottenham’s recent string of losses and poor results. His current contract with Tottenham keeps him with the club until 2024. Therefore, until Lloris’ contract is up, he’s their guy, although Tottenham has their eye on a possible successor.
The situation with the national team is different. No doubt, Lloris wants to break the record of most appearances and he’s close to achieving it. While he’s still playing well for Les Bleus, the fact that he’s aging is a cause for concern. It may be time for France to begin looking for their next starting goalkeeper because they’ll need one ready to go once Lloris sets the gloves down.
The French Football Federation hasn’t said anything regarding the national team’s future as far as the goalkeeping position goes, which means they still have a lot of faith in Lloris. It looks as though the FFF intends to let Lloris retire from international duty when he feels the time is right. However, while it’s certainly safe to assume that this year’s World Cup can possibly be his last, it’s unclear when Lloris will retire from the game in both domestic and international play. In other words, it’s unclear when an official announcement will be made from either Lloris or the FFF.
