The French national team is preparing to face Belgium on Thursday in a Nations League semifinal. As of late, the defending World Cup champions are struggling and have not put up convincing results in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Quite frankly, the national team is a mess. Furthermore, it looks as though the national team’s manager Didier Deschamps is losing control, which is not a good sign for the French Football Federation.

What makes matters worse is that Kylian Mbappé is considering stepping away from the national team. Some sources indicate he’s considering taking a break while others state he’s considering retirement. According to ESPN, Mbappé considered taking a break from international duty after missing his penalty which eliminated France from Euro 2020 in the Round of 16. It’s unclear if it was last summer or just recently when Mbappé considered a hiatus/retirement from international duty. The bottom line is that losing him strikes a major blow to the national team.

Breaking Point

Mbappé described his penalty miss as the “the low point” of his career. During a meeting with the president of the French Football Federation, Mbappé revealed that he suffered racial abuse as a result of his penalty miss. In addition, he stated that the lack of support from the abuse has really hurt him. Furthermore, Paris Saint-Germain blocking his potential transfer to Real Madrid really upset him. Mbappé informed PSG of his desire to leave the club in July and turned down numerous extension offers.

No doubt, it’s been a very stressful and painful year for the 22-year-old French forward. It’s very understandable that he’s currently in a tough situation regarding both international duty and club soccer.

End of the Line for Mbappé?

It’s obvious that Mbappé needs to regain his confidence with France. He was recalled to the national team last week. If he can put up a strong performance against Belgium and help lead France to the Nations League final, it’s a huge step forward. Furthermore, helping France win the title ought to give him a major boost of confidence and faith regarding his future. In addition, help, and support from his teammates will be a great help. His teammates must convince Mbappé that he’s important to the national team and the team needs him. With the trust and support of his compatriots, he’ll be able to convince himself that he’s a vital part of Les Bleus.

Mbappé is immensely talented and he has a bright future ahead. After his downfall at Euro 2020, he’s being heavily doubted. Therefore, it’s up to him to silence the critics and turn the doubters into believers.
