Indianapolis Colts vs. Kansas City Chiefs: Recap and Highlights

The Indianapolis Colts faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 6, 2019, in Week 5 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.

Attempting to keep their undefeated status, the Kansas City Chiefs welcomed the Indianapolis Colts to Arrowhead Stadium for a Sunday Night Football primetime showdown. The teams didn’t disappoint the fans, offering a plethora of nerves and excitement mixed in with nailbiting for good measure. The Colts were able to hold on and eventually knocked the Chiefs off of their undefeated pedestal.

Recap

The game opened with the Chiefs receiving the ball, but they were only able to get three points from Harrison Butker out of the 12-play drive. Once the Colts received the ball, they were able to respond and took the ball 70 yards in 11 plays with a rushing touchdown by Jacoby Brissett.

Not to be outdone, the Chiefs spent the rest of the first quarter and some of the second with the ball and came up with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Byron Pringle. This gave them a 10-7 lead over the Colts. However, the Colts didn’t waste any time in tying up the score. The Colts quickly went on a seven-play drive with Adam Vinatieri hitting a field goal. Kansas City appeared to not be able to make the most of getting the ball down the field and had to take a three-and-out. As an answer, the Colts tacked on three more points to take the lead 13-10.

Amazingly, the Colts held the Chiefs to only 11 rushing yards in the first half.

In the second half of the game, the third quarter gave us some back and forth between the two teams, but no real substance. The defenses for both the teams were able to force punts, and no one added to their score.

During the fourth quarter, it seems that the Colts finally figured out how to move the ball against the Chiefs’ defense. Although no touchdowns resulted from their efforts, they were able to tack on several field goals to make it 19-10. The Chiefs, not only in the fourth quarter but throughout the entire game, seem to have been plagued by needless penalties. With a stymied offense, the Chiefs were unable to convert any of their possessions. By the time the Chiefs seemed to get it together, it was too late, and the game was over when Jack Doyle recovered the onside kick with 1:15 remaining in the game.

It’s hard to believe the Colts were able to eke out this victory. However, when you realize they held the Chiefs to only 36 rushing yards for the entire game, it begins to make more sense. As great as Mahomes is with this throwing ability, the offense still needs to produce on the ground, and they failed to do so.

Injuries

The third quarter saw some injuries for the Chiefs’ Chris Jones, Andrew Wylie, and Patrick Mahomes. Indianapolis’ Kemoko Turay suffered a horrible ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

Final Score: Colts 19, Chiefs 13

Looking Ahead

The Chiefs will be facing the Houston Texans on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019, in a home game at Arrowhead at 1:00 p.m. EST. Meanwhile, the Colts enter their bye week riding high and celebrating their victory.
